My Insect teachers lectures - August 27
Adaptation and coexistence
according to butterflies
Find out what butterflies have taught Professor Federico Riva through his research, at this aperitif-conference hosted by journalist Marianne Desautel Marissal.
Assistant professor at Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam, Federico Riva remembers his earliest close contact with insects. It was bumblebees, and he was three years old. Since then, his passion for insects and nature has steadily grown. He decided to devote his academic and professional career to species conservation. His studies led him to realize the degree to which land use, especially in agriculture, has a negative effect on biodiversity, everywhere on the planet. He is now driven by a sense of responsibility, as he searches for a deeper understanding of how land management might allow humans to use the Earth’s resources more sustainably.

My Insect teachers lectures series
Coexisting with insects leaves hardly anyone indifferent. However common it may be for these little critters to provoke reactions of discomfort in people, those who work closely with them come to see that these living beings can be a source of wonder, learning – and even life lessons!
As part of the My Insect teachers lectures, researchers, naturalists and informed amateurs share their experiences with insects and how these have forever changed their lives. An invitation to share reflections with enthusiasts on the place of humans on the planet and on the importance of all forms of life.
The Italian series, on August 26 and 27, 2024, is presented by the Insectarium de Montréal in collaboration with the Italian Institute of Culture.
